Education in Wichita

Hello everyone,
Today I am working with Chandra Wenke trying to get our website "Kiefer For Kids" up and running.  I am so excited to get my ideas and opinions out to as many voters as I can. With that in mind, please pass on a link to this page to your friends and family.  The Board of Education has many difficult challenges ahead of them in regards to budget cuts, bond issues, new boundaries, and maintaining diversity within our schools. I really want to be part of those decisions and solutions. As a mother of 3 sons, all these issues will touch me and my family personally.  Also, please "like" my Facebook page, "Susan Kiefer for BOE".  I will be posting updates throughout my campaign and please make it to the polls March 1st to vote for me.
If you are interested in helping me spread the word of my candidacy please contact me at kieferforkids@gmail.com. Currently I am looking for donations to my campaign, volunteers to walk their neighborhoods, hosting meet and greets and I am also available to speak to any group you may be a member of.
Thank you for sharing this journey with me,
Susan

Susan,
As I understand the district will add 6 new buildings/schools over the next three years. Some in close proximity to existing schools. I would assume this will create changes in boundaries for many schools.
How do we achieve a fair way of changing the feeder patterns?

The redesigning of the boundries will affect all those who live within the USD 259 district so community input is a must. I believe in the utilization of parent and citizen committees from all over the district. I want to utilize these volunteer committees effectively while minimizing any negative impact it may have on the children. This process also needs to be transparent in its entirety.

As I understand from the budget meeting last week, phase 2 of the bond issue will be completed, however, phase 3 will not begin because of the current budget crisis. Won't this affect the building of any new schools? With $30.4 million in budget cuts, teachers jobs will be cut. These 'new' schools will not have anyone or any money to run them.

Jennifer,
The BOE has voted to pause and reevaluate the bond issue. I can not begin to speculate where the Board will go from there. The fact is that our children do need new schools as some schools are overcrowded with new growth.
It is a fact that the budget cuts will happen and I propose to keep those cuts as far away from the children as possible. Many tough decisions are coming and as a parent of children in the school system, I will have a new perspective when it comes to evaluating those decisions. I believe in maintaining the classrooms and the teachers who support them.
